Nov 04 Oct 07 Sep 30 The Prophet Isaiah 48:1-11 1 "Listen to me, O family of Jacob, you who are called by the name of Israel and born into the family of Judah. Listen, you who take oaths in the name of the LORD and call on the God of Israel. You don't keep your promises, 2 even though you call yourself the holy city and talk about depending on the God of Israel, Whose name is the LORD of Heaven's Armies. 3 Long ago I told you what was going to happen. Then suddenly I took action, and all My predictions came true. Sep 23 The Prophet Isaiah 35:1-10 1 Even the wilderness and desert will be glad in those days. The wasteland will rejoice and blossom with spring crocuses. 2 Yes, there will be an abundance of flowers and singing and joy! The deserts will become as green as the mountains of Lebanon, as lovely as Mount Carmel or the plain of Sharon. There the Lord will display His glory, the splendor of our God. Sep 16 Sep 09 Sep 02 1 Then the Spirit of God came upon Azariah son of Oded, 2 and he went out to meet King Asa as he was returning from the battle. "Listen to me, Asa!" he shouted. "Listen, all you people of Judah and Benjamin! The LORD will stay with you as long as you stay with Him! Whenever you seek Him, you will find Him. But if you abandon Him, He will abandon you. Aug 12 Aug 05 We’ve been reading together through the Old Testament in 2007: This past week reading the sayings of Solomon from the Book of Proverbs. Did you know that the Book of Proverbs never once – in all of its discussion and promotion of wisdom, godly behavior, and good judgment – never once talks about pardon or forgiveness or in any way how to respond to another who has wronged us? So I’d like to read this morning from a place in the Word of God that does talk about forgiveness. 21 Then Peter came to Him and asked, "Lord, how often should I forgive someone who sins against me? Seven times?" 22 "No, not seven times," Jesus replied, "but seventy times seven! 1:1 These are the proverbs of Solomon, David's son, king of Israel. 1:5 About that time David’s son Adonijah, whose mother was Haggith, decided to make himself king in place of his aged father. So he provided himself with chariots and horses and recruited fifty men to run in front of him. 1 O LORD, you have examined my heart and know everything about me. 2 You know when I sit down or stand up. You know my thoughts even when I'm far away. 3 You see me when I travel and when I rest at home. You know everything I do. Jul 02 Jun 17 Psalm 87, Ephesians 4:31-5.2Mathew 6:9-12, 14-15 Elder Julia Wheeler Dean Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of malicious behavior. Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you. Jun 10 Jun 03 Psalm 87, A Psalm of the descendents of Korah A song 1 On the holy mountain stands the city founded by the LORD. 2 He loves the city of Jerusalem more than any other city in Israel.* 3 O city of God, what glorious things are said of you! Interlude 4 I will count Egypt* and Babylon among those who know Me—also Philistia and Tyre, and even distant Ethiopia.* They have all become citizens of Jerusalem! 5 Regarding Jerusalem* it will be said, "Everyone enjoys the rights of citizenship there." And the Most High will personally bless this city. 6 When the LORD registers the nations, He will say, "They have all become citizens of Jerusalem." Interlude 7 The people will play flutes* and sing, "The source of my life springs from Jerusalem!" May 27 Psalm 17, A Prayer of David Hear a just cause, O LORD, give heed to my cry; give ear to my prayer, which is not from deceitful lips. Let my judgment come forth from Your presence; let Your eyes look with equity. May 20 The First Book of Samuel, 28:3-19 As our reading begins, Saul is the king over the Twelve Tribes of Israel, waging battle after battle with the neighboring Philistines, and trying to track down and kill David, one of his military commanders, whom Saul sees as a rival and threat. May 13 The First Book of Samuel, 2:12-26 Now the sons of Eli were scoundrels who had no respect for the LORD May 06 The Book of Judges, 13:8-24 In the days of the Judges, a man and his wife were unable to become pregnant and have any children. One day a “man of God” appeared to the woman when she was alone telling her she would soon become pregnant by her husband and bear a son. Her husband’s name was Manoah. Apr 29 The Book of Joshua, 24:1-15 Then Joshua summoned all the tribes of Israel to Shechem, including their elders, leaders, judges, and officers. So they came and presented themselves to God. Apr 22 The Book of Joshua, 6:15-27 Our Scripture reading begins after Joshua has met with the mysterious ‘Commander of the LORD’s army’ and received special instructions for taking the great walled city of Jericho that guarded the western entry into the Promised Land. After six days of Israel’s entire fighting force and priests carrying the Ark of the Covenant circling the immense city, our reading begins… Apr 15 According to the Third Book of Moses, Leviticus 18:1-12 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Give the following instructions to the people of Israel. I am the LORD your God..... Our reading begins after the women have arrived to find the tomb’s stone rolled away, the tomb empty, and a messenger-angel telling them not to be afraid, that Jesus is no longer dead, and that they should go and tell the disciples to return to Galilee where Jesus will meet them. The other disciples have not believed them: Peter and the disciple Jesus loved going to the tomb to see for themselves. Mary Magdalene has returned to the tomb, and this is what happened to her after Peter and the other disciple left. Apr 01 Mar 25 How Do You Know God Loves You? Then the LORD said to Moses, "Gather before me seventy men who are recognized as elders and leaders of Israel. Bring them to the Tabernacle to stand there with you. I will come down and talk to you there..... The LORD said to Moses, "Command the people of Israel to bring you pure oil of pressed olives for the light, to keep the lamps burning continually. This is the lampstand that stands in the Tabernacle, in front of the inner curtain that shields the Ark of the Covenant. Aaron must keep the lamps burning in the LORD's presence all night. This is a permanent law for you, and it must be observed from generation to generation. Aaron and the priests must tend the lamps on the pure gold lampstand continually in the LORD's presence. Mar 11 Mar 04 Keeping Just Right; Exodus 33:12-17 One day Moses said to the LORD, "You have been telling me, `Take these people up to the Promised Land.' But you haven't told me whom you will send with me. You have told me, `I know you by name, and I look favorably on you.' If it is true that you look favorably on me, let me know your ways so I may understand you more fully and continue to enjoy your favor. And remember that this nation is your very own people."
If the Book of Exodus tells what it takes and how things must be to have God live among a people, then the Book of Leviticus tells how to keep God living among the people without His majestic holiness destroying us all. Exodus is all about building the Sanctuary and its furnishings just right, clothing the priesthood just right, enacting the covenant just right, consecrating it all just right, and then living day to day just right. And once everyone and everything are just right, Leviticus comes along to describe the ways that people can say “thank you” in the midst of God’s blessing, and the ways that people can say “we’re sorry” when they’ve broken the covenant refusing to comply with God’s will, and all the sacrifices that need to be made and offered to give heartfelt thanks and seek sincere forgiveness to keep everything and everyone just right. At the LORD's command, the whole community of Israel left the wilderness of Sin and moved from place to place. Eventually they camped at Rephidim, but there was no water there for the people to drink. So once more the people complained against Moses. "Give us water to drink!" they demanded." Quiet!" Moses replied. "Why are you complaining against me? And why are you testing the LORD?" But tormented by thirst, they continued to argue with Moses. "Why did you bring us out of Egypt? Are you trying to kill us, our children, and our livestock with thirst?" Then Moses cried out to the LORD, "What should I do with these people? They are ready to stone me!"
